What do you believe?

Last night, someone randomly sent me an email that simply asked, “What do you believe?”

It wasn’t prefaced with anything, or expounded upon at all. I stared at the question for a good couple of minutes…what do I believe about religion, politics, our human state, society, America, life, love? What?

I wasn’t sure where to begin, and what exactly to cover. But I just started writing, without thinking, and this is what I wrote:

Well…I believe in love. But not as an emotion, rather as commitment and work.

I believe in the spirit of Ubuntu, which means “I am what I am because of who we all are”.

I believe that we are all here for a reason, and each of us find purpose in our different individualized reasons, but that if we are all here together, we should live together, trying to find likeness and bonding in our commonalities rather than reasons to hate each other or push each other away because of our differences.

I believe in God, but I believe God is misrepresented by mostly every organized religion.

I do not believe in a misogynist, war-hungry, hateful God. I believe we misunderstand God because we misunderstand what love is.

I believe we would all be better off if we acknowledged God within each other, and respected each other as such.

I believe in community, even when people are annoying.

I believe in doing good.

I believe that humans are capable of terrible evils, and beautiful goodness.

I believe that if we focused more on trying to bring heaven into the hell that many live in, in the here and now, this world would be a better place.

I believe in “us”, and I believe we create most of our problems, but amazingly, and simultaneously, hold the answer most of the worlds problems, it just takes people willing to act.

I believe that the most evil person is capable of good, and the most glorified saint is capable of evil.

I believe awareness of our human situation is important for us to keep in mind at all times.

I believe in seeking justice, standing up for the vulnerable and the weak, making right the wrongs of my ancestors, and attempting to leave this place better than I found it, but not get discouraged by the fact that that is virtually impossible.

Um…that was just off the top of my head. I’m sure I believe in more stuff too.

beautiful Ryan, absolutely beautiful! I have always said God should have cloned you into many persons, one to live in Cape Town, one in Mt Frere, one in every place where people are hurting and needing a good friend, maybe one in America (if absolutely necessary:-), one in every street corner where there are children who need unconditional love, inspiration, friendship and the restoration of their lost childhood. may the good Lord bless you and by the way I share ALL of your beliefs, plus the belief that people have a right to change their mind…
